A morning routine is an absolute must!

I never realized just how essential a good morning routine was until I had one. And honestly I didn’t even realize I needed a good morning routine until I had a therapist that told me so. When I was at my lowest point, I would wake up just long enough to let the dogs out and then I would go back to sleep on the couch until the very last minute until I had to get up to work. In turn I found myself dragging with limited energy all day and more often than not I was in a bad mood ha.

I didn’t know that by going back to sleep after I was already up, that I was essentially messing with my body’s ability to get me ready for the day. Your brain actually develops a pattern to waking up, where it starts to increase your body temperature and begins to produce more dopamine in order to prepare you for the day. However when we go back to sleep or hit snooze, we confuse the body and put it back into a sleep cycle and it doesn't know what to do with everything it just sent to the brain to get you ready for the day.

No wonder I was pissed most of the time!

Don’t worry, I’m not the type of morning person that goes for a run or does something super productive, but I will suggest what has worked for me for the last 6 years.

  1. Do something as soon as you get up that will keep you from laying back down. For example, a shower, make coffee or even just breakfast.

This is when I started drinking coffee- not because of the coffee itself, but more for the routine of making something that was ready and not likely to be the same if I went back to sleep.

2. Give yourself plenty of time, to take your time. - Again, I’m not all the way there where I would be giving myself time for being super productive like reading a book or personal development- although I always think that sounds nice ha- but I do give myself a good hour where I can drink my coffee, surf Facebook and instagram, watch the news… really just chill - and I LOVE this time of my day!

3.Go to bed early!!! I know this may be the biggest challenge for a lot of people but you don’t have to go all the way at first. I literally go to bed at 9pm every single night. Now, I also know I’m coming from a place with no children… but I have 9 nieces and nephews so I know that is never easy, not too mention if you’re a parent, after the kids go down you may feel this is your time to do things for you or the house… but don’t give up on your own health and wellbeing- try getting to bed earlier - it is a game changer, I promise.

(not to mention the benefits all around when you’re getting the sleep you need- skin looks better, your immune system is stronger, energy better- and of course for me I’m a much happier person rested)
